Ambrose Bierce

Bierce, born in 1842, was a journalist and author who lived a colourful life - he fought in the American civil war, and disappeared without trace at the age of 71 when travelling with Pancho Villa's Mexican revolutionaries. During his lifetime, Bierce was better known as a journalist than as a fiction writer. His most popular stories were written in rapid succession between 1888 and 1891.
